Purchasing became “Sourcing”, and then “Strategic Sourcing”.

“Strategic sourcing is a systematic corporate/institutional procurement process that continuously improves and re-evaluates the purchasing activities of a company. It is one component of supply chain management. While most organizations implement strategic sourcing initiatives for the purposes of saving money, other reasons for implementing strategic sourcing include improving supplier performance and minimizing risk.”
As Purchasing evolved into Sourcing, so did the ability to measure its value.

Many companies now spend more than half of their operating costs on direct materials, indirect materials, and services, with manufacturing companies typically spending between 50 and 70 per cent of revenue on direct purchases.

·         In many markets, customers expect prices to drop or remain flat while quality or capability increases.
·         Investors expect EPS (earnings per share) to continue increasing while prices remain flat and while the salaries of talented executives steadily increase.

SOURCING VALUE SUMMARY

Value Measurement
Value Definition
Capture Method
PPU - Price Per Unit
Lower unit costs
Simple Auction
TCA - Total Cost of Acquisition
Lowest Landed Cost
(includes freight)
Adjusted Auction
TCO - Total Cost of Ownership
Lowest Usage Cost
(includes indirect cost)
Decision Optimization
TVM - Total Value Management
Highest Value to Cost Ratio (balances risk vs. cost)
Integrated Decision Optimization

Widely Accepted Sourcing Standard - Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)

PRO's
TCO
takes into account all direct costs (such as PPU, transportation, tariffs, etc.), indirect costs (product utilization costs, switching costs, transaction costs, etc.), and quantifiable market costs (quality, brand, etc.). In essence, it captures every cost associated with the product and provides a total usage cost. TCO is often considered the best comparative cost metric.

CON's
Although TCO is significantly better than TCA, (which is better still than PPU), it is still a very cost centric approach. When misunderstood, TCO can distract sourcing professionals from their ultimate goal, which is optimizing the supply chain from a total value perspective and insuring that each sourcing project yields long term gains, and not just short term cost savings.

Strategic sourcing is sourcing for value. It’s concerned with finding the right price, not the lowest price. Sometimes value is gained by selecting a lower cost provider, and sometimes value is gained by selecting a higher cost provider with greater quality and reliability.

TVM insists that all value-based measures and costs are included in the model, thus minimizing potential risks. Sourcing based on a TVM approach is easily obtainable for all organizations – especially ones already following a TCO approach.

A dark slice

Have you tried to make bread without a crust? you can't! Crust is literally the 'outside' of a loaf of bread. It exists because it needs to. Because he's the slice that people deserve, but not the one they need right now. So we won't eat them. Because they can take it. Because they're not our 'normal bread'. They are a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark slice.

Bee the change

Courtesy: Reema.Gehi @timesgroup.com
LESSON 1 DIVIDE DUTIES

Bees lead a structured life.Their roles are welldefined, and they are genetically programmed not to trespass into anothers territory. The drones mate with the queen. The queen lays eggs, and the worker bees are beasts of burden. The last lot handles every responsibility from scavenging, storing pollen and processing the nectar to feeding the queen bee. There is no conflict of roles, and thats the perfect model to adopt in any organisation.Lets say,you define waking up and going to work as a daily goal.Thats not a definite goal.A professional goal needs clarity. It must be worth achieving so that a specific outcome can be expected,as is the case with bees working towards one clear goal to produce honey.

LESSON 2 CO-OPERATE

The spirit of cooperation is more important to bees than the spirit of competition. It takes a cluster of them to derive honey; they know they cant do it alone. And this is possible only because they coexist.Members of a professional team must bring in their own experience and expertise to a project to help create an effective product.Communicating and sharing ideas is crucial,as is mutual respect for each members contribution.

LESSON 3 BE LOYAL

Loyalty to ones community is key to its long term survival. If bees are storing pollen and processing nectar from a mango plant, they will not be distracted until the time they are done working on that particular plant. In a very silent way, there's a mutual understanding between the flower and the bee about what theyd like to achieve from each other. The flowers trust them because over time, bees have established themselves as a loyal species. A loyal employee is one who sticks to guidelines, working hours and meets.

LESSON 4 WORK HARD

Ever watched a worker honey bee do her job. Shes perpetually on her feet, just like the matriarch who saves for the future. The honey bees work ethics have even inspired adages (being busy as a bee,be the bees knees). Drones (male bees),however, are lazy. They do no work, which is why the worker honey bees (female) end up attacking them. This could happen to you some day,if you sit around warming your chair, letting others take the workload! deadlines, all of which guarantee productivity and satisfied clients. In the modern workplace, loyalty is an ethic that's highly valued. Remember, most employers want to hire professionals they can nurture so that the company stands to gain.Over time, this loyalty reaps benefits for the employee too, whether its through perks or promotion.

LESSON 5 BE PUNCTUAL

Punctuality is a common professional ethic that most of us fall short on.For bees, everything depends on the sun. They start their day soon after the sun rises, and return to their hives around 3.30 pm (unless the skies are overcast ).Keeping time helps them deliver optimum results. In a professional set up,the workplace operates smoothly when workers stick to time.Being late often ups stress levels, and that's not the best state to be in if you wish to be productive.Being habitually late can lock you into a pattern. When tardiness becomes the norm, even your job might be in jeopardy.

LESSON 6 DUTY COMES FIRST,RIGHTS NEXT

For bees, society comes first, the self comes later. Its a fiercely protective species. In a hive, one worker bee serves as a guard who prosecutes intruders who try breaking into the hive.If threatened,it stings. When a bee stings,it dies.It sacrifices its own life to protect its community and colleagues. For bees,it is duty first.

                                                    "The One That Got Away"

Summer after high school when we first met
We made out in your Mustang to Radiohead
And on my 18th Birthday
We got matching tattoos

Used to steal your parents' liquor
And climb to the roof
Talk about our future
Like we had a clue
Never planned that one day
I'd be losing you

In another life
I would be your girl
We'd keep all our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away

I was June and you were my Johnny Cash
Never one without the other we made a pact
Sometimes when I miss you
I put those records on (Whoa)

Someone said you had your tattoo removed
Saw you downtown singing the Blues
It's time to face the music
I'm no longer your muse

But in another life
I would be your girl
We'd keep all our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away
The o-o-o-o-o-one [x3]
The one that got away

[Bridge:]
All this money can't buy me a time machine (Nooooo)
Can't replace you with a million rings (Nooooo)
I should've told you what you meant to me (Whoa)
'Cause now I pay the price

In another life
I would be your girl
We'd keep all our promises
Be us against the world

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away
The o-o-o-o-o-one [x3]

In another life
I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
The one that got away

The essence of guru in our life.

The day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of Ashadh is traditionally celebrated as Guru Purnima by Hindus.
Also known as Vyas Purnima, the day is celebrated in remembrance and veneration to sage Ved Vyas. He is the Adi (original) Guru of the Hindu Dharma, who classified the Vedas, wrote the eighteen Puranas and the Mahabharat. On this day, the Guru is offered Pujan (worship)by the disciples. First we shall consider the role of a Guru in life.

The Need of a Guru

The Sanskrit root "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru" denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore one who removes darkness of our ignorance is a Guru. Only he who removes our ultimate darkness, known as Maya, and who inspires and guides us on to the path of God-realization is the true Guru. Students also refer to their school teacher or college lecturer as guru. The connotation of the word guru in this case is one who imparts temporal knowledge (Apara Vidya) and is thus accordingly offered respect. A spiritual aspirant, no matter how brilliant, can never attain such knowledge by his own endeavor.
This is stipulated in the Shrimad Bhagwatam in which Jadbharat reveals to king Rahugan: "O Rahugan! One cannot attain knowledge of Atma and Paramatma by performing penance, sacrifices, renunciation, Vedic study or worshiping deities of water, fire or the sun. But when the dust from the feet of a satpurush (God-realized Guru) sprinkles on our heads, then we can surely attain this knowledge." In essence, one can only attain salvation by serving the satpurush.
Treading the path to God-realization by one's own efforts is likened by the Katha Upanishad as walking on a razor's edge. Adi Shankaracharya echoes a similar injunction: "If a person, despite possessing: a handsome, disease-free body, fame, a mountain of wealth, and even if he has studied the Vedas and all other scriptures, and has himself composed many scriptures, but has not surrendered himself at the feet of a Guru, then he has achieved nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing."
The Guru plays a vital role in boosting the aspirant frequently, when he loses track, becomes despondent or simply runs out of steam. The aspirant is thus better able to obey the Guru if he understands the Guru's glory.

Glory of the Guru

The Hindu shastras have hailed such a Guru immeasurably: Skanda Purana - Guru Gita A famous verse known by heart by all Hindu children glorifies the Guru:

Gurubrahma Guruvishnu Gururdevo Maheshwaraha |
Guruhu sakshaat Parambrahman tasmai Shrigurave namaha ||

"The guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva), veneration to the Guru who is Parabrahman manifest."
The second line of the couplet does not literally mean that the Guru becomes Parabrahman - God, rather he is venerated as if God is manifesting through him. The Guru and Govind -God, are present before me, to whom shall I bow down first? Glory to the Guru since he showed me Govind. Apart from guiding the aspirant on the path to God-realization, the Guru throws light on the profound meanings of the vast array of scriptural knowledge. Hence the Mundaka Upanishad calls such a Guru "Shrotriya" - knower of the true meanings of the scriptures.
Adi Shankaracharya forbids an aspirant in endeavoring to decipher the meanings without a Guru. In his commentary on a Mantra (1/2/13) of the Mundaka Upanishad, he says: "Even if one possesses knowledge of the scriptures, he should not attempt to delve into their meanings by himself. He should obtain the knowledge of Brahman only through the Guru." In their treatises, other Acharyas, such as Ramanuj and Nimbark have considered the Guru mandatory in God-realization. The Guru, In accordance with the injunctions from shastras of Hindu Dharma cited above, considers the Guru as foremost; to be venerated as one venerates God. It uses the terms Sadhu and Satpurush synonymously for the true Guru. Gadhada III.27: "
The scriptures advocate five attributes of: Nishkam, Nirlobh, Nirman, Niswad and Nisneha for a sadhu.
The sadhu in whom one observes such attributes has a constant rapport with God. Therefore one should have immutable faith in his words, and by his words should realize the knowledge of God." Gadhada III.26: "The sadhu who lives in a way in which he subdues his indriyas and antahkaran, but is not subdued by them, who engages in God-related activities only, strictly observes the Panch Vartamans, believes himself as being Brahman and worships Lord Purushottam, can be known neither as a human being nor a deva, since neither man nor deva possess such attributes.
Therefore such a sadhu, though a human being, deserves to be worshipped at par with God." Finally, how should an aspirant serve such a Guru? Serving the Guru Again the scriptures guide the aspirant:

(1) Shvetashvatara Upanishad (6/23) : Advocates worship to the Guru in the same manner as the deity - God, to attain all there is to attain on the path of God-realization: Yasya deve para bhaktir yatha deve tatha gurau | Tasyaite kathitaa hi arthaaha prakashante mahatmanaha ||

(2) Bhagavad Gita (4/34) : The disciple should humbly pose questions to the Guru and please him by serving him. He will then impart the knowledge of God, so ordain the wise sages.

(3) Shrimad Bhagvatam : Bhagwan Rushabhdeva advocates his sons: Obeying the Anuvrutti - unvoiced wishes - of God and Guru is devotion.

(4 ) Vachanamrutam (Vadtal 5) : The aspirant should offer equal and intensely loving service to God and His sadhu. Then, despite being the lowest type of devotee who is destined to become a great-devotee after either two births or four births or ten births or even a hundred births, he can become a great devotee in this birth. Such is the fruit of serving God and His sadhu equally."

The phrase "great devotee" signifies moksha-salvation. Therefore on the day of Guru Purnima, disciples introspect, and resolve to offer pujan and reverence to the Guru in mind, action and speech; implicitly obey his unvoiced wishes, commands, serving him as one would God and lauding his glory and redemptive attributes.

Every year, the Guru Purnima Festival, is celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm at Mandirs around the world.

when i rise up or wake up, then

When is the best time to write. When is the best time to think to write. It's when you feel cozy, calm & composed or when you are on high spirits, furious about the things you dislike. Write for yourself or write to address specific set of audience. Use your pen as a sword or as a flower. Whatever it is, you write; most importantly you enjoy your thoughts, ideas penned down.

The day i thought of writing a book, "Life is all about buying & selling". I felt it as a huge task; of course it is my first book that i thought to write. To my notice came up many reasons, why not to write a book on such a veteran topic 'life'. May be i'm not seasoned enough to complete my endless thoughts. Will i be able to add meat to matter or just matter to meat.

Then i understood that its all about my eXperience, my life. If i'm successful, i will publish it; if not, even then i will publish. I will ensure it is done, when i rise up or wake up, then.

"I CAN AFFORD IT" is the new civilized mantra

Gone are the days when we used to be dependent on our family, our friends & society as a whole; cause,    "We an afford it.". To loose friends, to loose family & to loose your well-wishers just because you don't need them; or to be more specific, "You can afford them".Do we for god sake understand the need to be self-reliant & not shirk the responsibility by calling ourselves independent. Another critical issue is sustainability & self-sufficiency for being self-reliant.

There are several core issues in the society that needs to be monitored - addressed at times & the best person who is able to do those are self-reliant.In an era of intense modernization/automation; which i call "Smarter Phones for Smarter Dummies" - because lazy & smarter people will find an effective & easiest way for getting things done. This ain't just because you can afford it, you need not know about how to grow your own food, how to build a shelter for yourself - Just in case you find yourself landing in the middle of the jungle the next day you wake up. Also, in real life examples like a country being hit by a severe drought & you scream; "Heyaa, why the tap is not working ha!" - just not gonna work out.

The agendas like being self-reliant, self-sufficient & sustainable shall be addressed only if one shows core competence. One doesn't need to compete others but you. All you need to get is 80% right. (Click the link to read about why you don't need to be 100% right).
So next time when you call yourself independent - Be proud only if you mean self-reliant, self-sufficient with a sustainable model & of course being dependent on your family, friends for letting them your accessibility. Not to forget your core-competence against you for getting only 80% right.

The Godfather

To help the helpless is hapless; but to empower the state of helplessness needs a 'God Father'. What a misery when a newbie is let to struggle the ill-fate that society has to offer. To withstand & withhold the heat requires a shatter-proof structure, as they say "That which doesn't kill, makes you stronger, makes you a fighter, is a 'God Father'.
A tiger with heavy bruises; is designed to fight it's way through to achieve & doesn't stop when tired but when done. What needs to be done is a critical element adjudged by, "The God Father" ; in this case a bruised tiger.

The Avenger

Godse is often a misunderstood character. He is referred to as a Hindu fanatic. It is often hard to understand Godse because the Government of India had suppressed information about him. His court statements, letters etc. were all banned from the public until recently. Judging from his writings one thing becomes very clear – He was no fanatic. His court statements are very well read out and indicate a calm and collected mental disposition. He never even once speaks ill about Gandhi as a person, but only attacks Gandhi's policies which caused ruin and untold misery to Hindus. Another interesting point to note is that Godse had been working with the Hindu refugees fleeing from Pakistan. He had seen the horrible atrocities committed on them. Many women had their hands cut off, nose cut off, even little girls had been raped mercilessly. Despite this Godse did not harm even single Muslim in India which he could easily have. So it would be a grave mistake to call him a Hindu fanatic.

Let us start by studying the motive behind Godse's act. By seeing the nature of the assassination in public space and Godse's act of turning himself over to the Police, we can see that Godse did not do this for personal reasons. He very well knew that he would be hanged and his name would be disgraced as Gandhi was considered a saint. And again Godse could have ran away and escaped punishment. But he did the reverse. He called a police officer and courted arrest. Before we proceed it would be wise to understand the backdrop of the assassination.

The central government had taken a decision — Pakistan will not be given Rs 55 crores. On January 13 Gandhi started a fast unto death that Pakistan must be given the money. On January 13, the central government changed its earlier decision and announced that Pakistan would be given the amount. On January 13, Nathuram decided to assassinate Gandhi.

Nathuram Godse was a learned man, very sharp and intelligent – editor of "Agrani" (one of the most famous newspaper of that time – with Nana Aapte). In his last editorial of "Agrani" which he changed overnight – he said "Gandhi must be stopped – at any cost" and he justified why Gandhiji's assassination was not only inevitable but also a delayed action, sth tht shud've happened LONG AGO.

In Nathuram's words - " I don't refute Gandhi's theory of non-violence. He may be a saint but he is not a politician. His theory of non-violence denies self-defence and self-interest. The non-violence that defines the fight for survival as violence is a theory not of non-violence but of self-destruction.The division of the nation was an unnecessary decision. What was the percentage of the Muslim population as compared to the population of the nation? There was no need for a separate nation. Had it been a just demand, Maulana Azad would not have stayed back in India. But because Jinnah insisted and because Gandhi took his side, India was divided, in spite of opposition from the nation, the Cabinet. An individual is never greater than a nation.

In a democracy you cannot put forward your demands at knife-point. Jinnah did it and Gandhi stabbed the nation with the same knife. He dissected the land and gave a piece to Pakistan. We did picket that time but in vain. The Father of our Nation went to perform his paternal duties for Pakistan! Gandhi blackmailed the cabinet with his fast unto death. His body, his threats to die are causing the destruction — geographical as well as economical — of the nation. Today, Muslims have taken a part of the nation, tomorrow Sikhs may ask for Punjab. The religions are again dividend into castes, they will demand sub-divisions of the divisions. What remains of the concept of one nation, national integration? Why did we fight the British in unison for independence? Why not separately? Bhagat Singh did not ask only for an independent Punjab or Subhash Chandra Bose for an independent Bengal?

I am going to assassinate him in the open, before the public, because I am going to do it as my duty. If I do it surreptitiously, it becomes a crime in my own eyes. I will not try to escape, I will surrender and naturally I will be hanged. One assassination, one hanging. I don't want two executions for one assassination and I don't want your involvement, participation or company. (This was for Nana-Apte and Veer Savarkar as they were against ghandhi's policies too, Godse wanted to assassinate gandhi all by himself and took promise from Nana Apte that he will continue helping Veer Savarkar in rebuilding India as a strong free nation.)

On January 30, I reached Birla Bhavan at 12 pm. Gandhi was sitting outside on a cot enjoying the sunshine. Vallabhbhai Patel's granddaughter was sitting at his feet. I had the revolver with me. I could have assassinated him easily then, but I was convinced that his assassination was to be a punishment and a sentence against him, and I would execute him. I wanted witnesses for the execution but there were none. I did not want to escape after the execution as there was not an iota of guilt in my mind. I wanted to surrender, but surrender to whom? There was a good crowd to collect for the evening prayers. I decided on the evening of January 30 as the date for Gandhi's execution.

Gandhi climbed the steps and came forward. He had kept his hands on the shoulders of the two girls. I wanted just three seconds more. I moved two steps forward and faced Gandhi. Now I wanted to take out the revolver and salute him for whatever sacrifice and service he had made for the nation. One of the two girls was dangerously close to Gandhi and I was afraid that she might be injured in the course of firing. As a precautionary measure I went one more step ahead, bowed before him and gently pushed the girl away from the firing line. The next moment I fired at Gandhi. Gandhi was very weak, there was a feeble sound like 'aah' (There are proof that Gandhi did NOT say "Hey Raam" at that time – it's just made up stuff ) from him and he fell down.

After the firing I raised my hand holding the revolver and shouted, 'Police, police'. For 30 seconds nobody came forward and I scanned the crowd. I saw a police officer. I signalled to him to come forward and arrest me. He came and caught my wrist, then a second man came and touched the revolver… I let it go…"

That's just not expected to happen in a transparent democracy. but we still have to live with this ugly truth for God know how many generations.
